I recently took a trip to Istanbul, Turkey in December 2022 and it was a truly incredible experience. However, like any trip, it had its ups and downs. I wanted to share some of the lessons and fails I learned during my time in Istanbul so that others can benefit from my experiences.
Firstly, one of the biggest lessons I learned was the importance of planning and researching before you go. Istanbul is a large city with a lot to offer, and I quickly found myself feeling overwhelmed and unsure of where to start. I wish I had taken more time to research the must-see sights, the best neighborhoods to stay in, and the best times to visit certain attractions.
Secondly, it’s best to be prepared for the weather. I was there during summer and the temperature was very hot, I underestimated how much water I would need and I was dehydrated in some points. Also, I didn’t pack enough sunblock, which resulted in me getting a sunburn.
Thirdly, I learned that Istanbul is a city that requires a lot of walking. I was under the impression that it would be easy to navigate the city by public transportation but I soon found out that wasn’t the case. I suggest that you wear comfortable shoes and bring a map or a guide, as getting lost in the city’s winding streets is all too easy.
Another important lesson I learned was about being mindful of my surroundings. Istanbul is a culturally rich city, and I found that certain behaviors and customs are considered rude or inappropriate. For example, you should always take your shoes off when entering a mosque, as it is considered disrespectful to wear shoes inside. Also, you should be mindful of your dress code, particularly when visiting religious sites.
Lastly, I failed to properly budget my time. I had a long list of things I wanted to do and see, but I didn’t consider how much time it would take to get from one place to another, especially in the heavy traffic of Istanbul. I ended up rushing through some of the places I wanted to see, which left me feeling unsatisfied.
In conclusion, my trip to Istanbul was filled with lessons and some fails that I learned from. But overall it was a great experience, I loved the culture, the food, and the people. I just wish I had been more prepared and better planned. I hope that by sharing my experiences, I can help others to have a more enjoyable and stress-free trip to Istanbul.
